Take a deep breath and say it loud – never can, never will, can’t hold us down

Women inspire and empower me daily. I wrote about wanting to start this series in my last blog post (yes, there was meant to be one in between…I was without internet for five days. Not by choice). Since then I have compiled a list of questions that I have asked some of my favourite ladies to fill in. Thankfully they were all up for the challenge and I’m really excited about reading their responses and I hope you will be too. I wanted to show that through our shared womanhood we are all individual, strong and interesting.
This week you get to read the thoughts of one of my oldest friends, Sam. She and I met when we were two at playgroup. We went on to be in the same class and firm friends for the past twenty-three years. Sam makes life look easy. Drawing, painting, piano playing, traveling and being an amazing nurse; this lady can do it all. She handles whatever comes her way with poise and a sense of calm and I really admire her for that. I have always been envious of the absolute confidence within herself that envelops and radiates off of her. A woman who has always steadfastly believed in equality for both women and men, I hope you enjoy reading her insight as much as I have.

samName: Sam

Age: 25

Location: Oxford now, but Brighton born

How have the women in your life shaped you and your ideals as a woman?
I have always considered myself a feminist. I have never understood gender inequality, even at a young age. I guess this comes from my mum, a beautifully strong woman who has the patience of a saint (Literally, sorry mum.) I have always been taught to be strong, be bold and mostly be myself. As I’ve grown older, I guess I have always gravitated towards amazing women, and I now work in a ‘female’ profession (Bullshit, men are nurses too… but that’s another story for another day). However, being a female ‘heavy’ profession, many powerful managerial jobs are staffed by females, and this means everyday exposure to women who are in power inspires me day. I think that women should aim for equality; no judgement in how they dress, what career path they choose, whether children are for them etc. It’s not difficult to grasp is it?

How do you deal with body image pressures and accepting yourself?
Body image is a crazy thing. I am a massive Instagram addict, I love it. I follow plus size models, hardcore feminists and the Suicide girls alike. However, nothing upsets me more than reading the comment sections of all of the above. There is literally so much hate on the internet. What upsets me the most is how personal these comments get. I find myself wanting to scream into my phone ‘WHAT THE FUCK IS IT TO YOU SHE’S A SIZE 24 GET A FUCKING LIFE’. The thing that annoys me the most is that it does affect me, and seriously take my hat of to anyone who is body positive. I’m an intensive care nurse, I see some horrible situations in my day job, and whenever I’m feeling uncomfortable in my body, I catch myself and take a deep breath and think ‘Your heart is beating, your lungs are breathing, you are alive, you are healthy, you have people who love you, nothing else matters’. At the end of the day this is all that matters. Girls, you are amazing humans. Your body does amazing things without effort. Does it matter you have love handles? Does it matter you have back rolls? No, it really doesn’t. I promise, people love you for you, these things are not important. Embrace your incredible body and never take it for granted.

What beauty product is a must for you?
Hello, my name is Sam and I am a make up addict. Phew, I’ve said it, it feels good to be out. I love make up, it makes me feel confident, it makes me feel pampered and I really enjoy the half an hour each morning getting ready, in the quiet. I find it relaxing. Liquid eyeliner is my bae. Anyone who uses liquid eyeliner needs to try Seventeen’s Tattoo Me 48 hour wear liquid eyeliner. It’s awesome and does actually stay on for 48 hours (I’ve tried this many times…).

Do you have a piece of advice for teenage you that you think would help growing into a woman easier?
Kill with kindness. Acknowledge your gut feeling, it’s usually right. Surround yourself with positive role models. You can achieve anything you want.

I think we need to be more open about women’s bodily functions such as periods. It is a natural process that we are made to feel is taboo. How did you deal with yours at first and do you have any tips?
I actually remember my first period. I sat next to my mum in the car and burst into tears telling her my period had started. She laughed at me and said ‘We better get you some pads then?’ What I remember most is how nervous I was to tell her. I look back on this and cannot understand why I was nervous, WTF?! It’s literally the same as saying ‘Mum, I sneezed!’ Or ‘Mum, I had a pee!’. This is a normal bodily function. It’s blood. I have the implant now as you know, I don’t want kids right now. This means for the last few years I have had the pleasure of 2 month periods (they have settled down now thank god). I was spending a large chunk of my salary on Tampons so I tried a Mooncup. I’m going to put this out there; I LOVE MY MOONCUP. It’s not for everyone, but clearly as a nurse blood doesn’t bother me or creep me out and I genuinely feel I have reclaimed my period. period.

What songs do you listen to that strike a spark in you and make you feel like you can take on the world?
I’ve struggled with this question. I am a massive music fan but I guess I’ve never thought about how certain songs have inspired me. A few come to mind though;
Frank Turner- I knew Prufrock before he got famous. I could have included a lot of Frank Turner. He is my hero, I have an album cover tattooed on my back. A lot of his music is about appreciating life, but this song in particular makes me smile every single time I listen to it. “Well life is about love”
Alexisonfire- Accidents. Whenever I need motivation. Mostly to go for a run.
Stornoway- Fuel Up. a lovely little Oxford band, this song is a clever analogy for driving/getting older. The last verse reminds me to text my school friends more “tonight you’re stumbling through your old town, you met up with your school friends who are just still the same, and you talked the same shit you talked in those days” this song is for when you feel a little directionless. I encourage everyone to have a listen.

Who in your life inspires you?
I’m lucky and surrounded by inspiring people. Everyone is overcoming demons in some way. My grandad was an amazing person, who overcame everything. He was blind, and was told he wouldn’t live past 10 years old because of a heart condition. He lived to 96. The best thing I learnt from him is the sweetest revenge is doing well. He was told he would never have a family but a careers advisor. He had 3 girls. He was told he wasn’t allowed to join the home guard because of his sight. He had to put a key in a lock for his sight test, and by pure luck he got it in. He had complete faith in his ability to do whatever he wanted.

How has age affected your perception of womanhood?
I give less of a shit now. Really. I do feel like age brings new problems though; Only last weekend I was at a family party hosted by my boyfriend’s parents. I did not know many people there. My boyfriend and I have been together many years, we’re not engaged, nor plan on having kids in the foreseeable future. Strangers literally did not stop asking me when I was planning on getting pregnant. I have recently been promoted in my job, I offered this as a conversation topic, no-one was interested. My womb was apparently interesting though. It pissed me off that, apparently, my worth came from my ability to procreate. But age gives you experience, and experience gives you wisdom. It teaches you to smile and try and understand why these situations come up.

What does Girl Power (/feminism) mean to you?
Equality , equality, EQUALITY. It means no pay difference, it means no education gap, it means no cat calling, it means no victim blaming, it means no belittling, it means no abuse, it means that females are recognised as equals to males. This is common sense to me, it frustrates me that this is an issue.

How would you set about making Gender Equality more equal? Perhaps more gender neutral bathrooms or scrapping ‘tampon tax’?
All of the above. The pay gap is a big issue for me. How can women be deemed as equal to men when they earn considerably less? It’s criminal, frankly. Women effectively work pay free from November until new year considering the pay difference. Women who have maternity leave should not be punished for this. I am a firm believer in instilling feminist ethics in a young age. Girls should not accept that boys hurt them because ‘they like them’. Girls should not be encouraged to be ‘lady like’. If girls want to play with dolls, that’s fantastic, it’s a great way to learn compassion and responsibility, but if boys want to play dolls too then we should encourage this. Equally, if girls decide that cars are more their thing then that’s great too.

What is something you do to take time for yourself?
I’ve just started Yoga and I love it. I also walk to work (it’s about 45mins) and I listen to audio books. I am a massive book worm and always thought that audio books weren’t the same, but now it’s part of my morning routine and I actually really look forward to walking to work! I currently going through the Harry Potter series. It’s perfect me time, I completely switch off and imagine which Hogwarts house I would be part off…

What has been your biggest struggle as a woman?
I am lucky, I can honestly say I have a situation in my mind that made me feel victimised as a women. This doesn’t mean that there isn’t a massive issue out there. I think safety is an issue, I have been followed home until the point I shouted at the guy to leave me alone. A few months ago my friend was followed home to the point she called the police she felt scared. This is so wrong.

How has your sexuality shaped you as a woman?
I love being a woman.

light and darkness combined, playing conscience and reason, until we intertwine

Deep breath. I have an online shopping addiction. Yes, it’s true. I do not discriminate as to what shop or type of item I buy…I just like to buy things. The little gremlins inside of my head begin to control me when I turn on my laptop, take control of my thoughts and my actions and make me purchase…stuff. This month they have been particularly badly behaved, even making me go out in to the real world to do some shopping with Meredith! Okay, so there were lots of deals and some birthday money involved but I still bought probably more than one needs. If, like me, you like to see what other people bought (mainly so you’re not missing out/can buy that thing you most likely don’t need but crave to have once you’ve seen it), welcome! This post will be showing you what I have bought…whilst trying to justify just why I did so. As always – *this is a short disclaimer: I am in no way showing off, as I have said above and in my last haul post – I just really like to see what others have bought, in case I might need one. If you don’t like haul blogs, you probably wont like this post…however, if you like men with beards you may really want to check out my previous blog post.*
Right, with that said, this is what I bought (with a few of my own reviews):
ImageNow that I look at it, it doesn’t seem too bad…
If you know me then you will know about my obsession with nail varnish. I don’t think it’s an alarming problem; I just can’t leave somewhere that sells tiny pots of candy for your fingers without buying some. Thus meaning Barry M’s Blue Moon, Strawberry Ice Cream, Magenta Glitter and Models Own Amethyst Velvet Goth had to make the trip home with me. I also like to dye part of my hair pink. It hasn’t been pink in longer than I care to think about due to the bureaucracy of life. However, I have had enough of boring hair and have been wanting to try La Riche Directions semi permenant dye for ages. So, when I found it for just £3.80 online (including p&p), I jumped at the chance. Usually I opt for a bright bright pink but this time I chose the colour Rose Red which is more of a deep magenta. Not that the photo I took does this any justice. If you want to know where I got it from for so cheap, leave me a comment.
ImageTiger is one of my favourite shops. It is a little like IKEA – without all the boring stuff like rugs and flat pack furniture, just the good stuff from the market place bit. Everything is so affordable, which makes it dangerous when you’re in the mood to spend money. If you haven’t been before they sell a plethora of homeware, stationary, gardening things, party essentials, food, toys and all sorts. Meredith and I were very excited for our trip along there. I bought the prettiest pink frame (it also came in mint green and I am sad I didn’t buy that one too) for a whole £3! Some tissue paper in pink, purple, orange and blue (2 for £1)  which I want to use to make a tassle garland and some pink square envelopes…because they were square and only £1 for 10. Also featured in this photo is a silver tin that carries water colour paints. I am not sure why I needed/wanted to buy these but I did, so now I can dome some painting…
ImageSome other things that I couldn’t help but put in my basket were some plasters in the cutest tin. Inside are 15 normal shaped plasters that are pink with tiny red hearts all over them and 15 red heart shaped plasters. Who doesn’t need these in their lives for only £2? A black clam shaped mirror that has both the normal sized mirror one side and the terrifyingly horrific whoneedstobethatcloseanyway mirror on the other. I first saw this on Essie Button’s Tiger haul on YouTube, although hers was a coral colour. The shop in Brighton only had these in black, but I couldn’t resist furthering my dreams to become a mermaid (and I plan to rhinestone it anyway)…plus I am a goth at heart. From Boots I bought some Palmers Cocoa Butter Formula lip balm mainly because I liked the shape of the tube but also because I really struggle with finding a lip balm that I like and just thought I would give this a go. I hate Vaseline, it always feels so thick and gloopy and just bloody horrible on my face. Then there’s hydrogenated coconut oil that always leaves white marks in the corners of your mouth, gross. And having to stick your finger in the pot is really unappealing. However, I am really rather enjoying this lip balm. Ah, now the glow in the dark bone hair clips! When I bought these hair clips through eBay from a seller in Hong Kong, I think something was lost in translation as I wasn’t aware they glowed in the dark. I just planned to rhinestone them like some I had seen before. However, I love anything glow in the dark, I just can’t help myself, so I was so very excited upon this magnificent discovery.
ImageI am a sucker for Soap and Glory scents and once I had smelt Butter Yourself, I couldn’t not buy it “a ludicrously fruity blend of super smoothing SHEA BUTTER, ORANGE WATERJUICE™, FIG PULP EXTRACT and ALMOND, MANGO & MORINGA OILS” Delicious! It has a really lovely consistency and actually soaks in rather than sitting on top of the skin and being all tacky, yuck. Although a little on the pricey side for a mosituriser at £10, it was included in the 3 for 2 deal at Boots and I just couldn’t deny myself.
Garnier Micellar cleansing water is something I had heard lots of good things about (it is supposed to be a dupe for Bioderma), a cleanser and makeup remover that you can use all over the face sounded good to me. It “contains micelles which act like magnets, gently lifting away makeup and impurities from the skin, without the need to rub or rinse”, I am not so sure about this statement. It takes about 3 cotton pads (both sides) to remove my makeup and although I can use it on my eyes without it stinging, it can often make my mascara run into my eyes, resulting in burning eyes of death. Probably a much better way of removing my makeup than the wetwipe I use before my Clean and Clear cleanser, I don’t feel that it actually cleanses my face properly at all. I wouldn’t want to use this as my only cleanser and it smells like stagnant pond water has been rubbed on my face after I have used it…very unappealing. I am going to continue to use it and maybe I will come to love it, but at the moment I cannot sing its praises.
Aromatherapy Associates Inner Strength Bath and Shower Oil is something my mum was sent for her birthday and it smelt so good and made her skin so soft, I needed some. It is definitely not a bargain buy at £39 for 55ml, but the packaging states that it is enough for 20 experiences. We only have a shower unit, so before getting into the shower you smooth this over your body and wait about 20 mins (clean your teeth, cleanse your face in the mean time) and then you just wash as normal with an unscented shower gel for the best results. The scent of Clary Sage, Frankincense, Cardamom, Vetivert and Geranium is soothing and calming whilst being uplifting too. The website states that it “balances emotions and help stimulate circulation”, all of this and 10% of the proceeds go to the foundation defense against cancer.
Whilst in Boots I also bough No.7’s anti dark spot facial sun protection cream in SPF 50. I am fair and I don’t like to tan (never mind the fact that I mostly reflect the sun with the transparent skin), so I have been searching for a really high factor face cream to wear under my makeup so I won’t get wrinkles/sunburn. I had a voucher for £5 off No.7 skin care, so it was affordable and smells amazing, whilst keeping my face protected from the occassional summers day we have here in the UK.
I first heard of Santhilea Magnetic Lash Mascara in December and have been lusting after it ever since. Then I had some birthday money left over, a voucher code for a website that sold it and a rekindled lust to own it thanks to my favourite blogger Sandra Beijer, click on the link to see what she has to say about it (if you can read fluent Swedish or can be bothered to read between the lines of Google translate like I do). It comes with 2 tubes, one a mascara and the other what appears to be a fluffy stick…there is a video that will explain it much better than I do on the LookFantastic website. It is magnificent, very effective and really simple to use whilst looking natural too!
ImageHere is a better idea of the size of the bone hair clip and photos of the lunch and macaroon date Meredith and I had this week.
ImageThe macaroons are from a french patisserie called Cocoa in Brighton that also make delicious and beautiful flavoured meringues. We opted for 5 macaroons – Black Forest, Pistachio, Vanilla, Rose and Salted Caramel – to share. A lovely day out buying lovely things and a good month of retail therapy so far.
I have something else I am working on at the moment, so that will probably be up at some point this weekend. A little more of a thoughtful post than this one but I like the variety.

machine men with machine minds and machine hearts!

Stuff I like on the internet. For this mid-week post that is what you shall be receiving. I am far too easily distracted today to write fully in-depth cohesive thoughts and have them be vaguely interesting for an entire post. I have turned the tv to mute, then off, tried music, tried classical music and I am still not really concentrating on the task in hand – this blog post. But I wanted to post something today. First off, I am once again expressing my love for John and Hank Green. They can really do no wrong in my book. They have several YouTube channels in which they are witty and intelligent – One of my new favourites being Crash Course. There are lots of short vibrant videos on: psychology, chemistry, US history, literature, ecology, biology and world history.
ImageAlso, Hank Green developed an Emmy Award winning series called The Lizzie Bennet DiariesThe Lizzie Bennet Diaries is a modernized adaptation of the classic Jane Austen novel, Pride and Prejudice. The story is told primarily through Lizzie Bennet‘s Video Diaries, while being supported by her and other characters social media streams.” Its brilliant, awesome and very funny. Go go go!
ImagePolo Nutini is back with new songs and a tour soon! This makes me extremely happy. His voice is so beautiful and is definitely in my top 5 favourites. He consistently gives me goosebumps and everything he does is perfect for the warming weather. His song Iron Sky is nothing short of entirely wonderful.

This Patrick Stump Quote
ImagePretentious quotes to live your life by. The internet if full of teenage angst ridden photos of mountains with deep quotes written over the top, taken from books or songs. For the most part I try to avoid such things – text that has been taken out of context and placed upon an image of no consequence irks me. However, when I see them printed in a bold font on a white background…well, it makes me want to buy them sometimes. Do these declarations on how you wish your life to be lived actually make an impact? One of my favourites is monochrome and boldly says “oh darling, let’s be adventurers” – does this mean that one morning I will grab my fedora and whip on my way out of the door to the temple of doom? I doubt it. However it does occur to me that if I were to follow the ‘inspirational meaning’ behind the prints I want on my walls, well, it could all end rather badly for me.

ImageI started off strong and ended with a photo of a smiling dog. Yeah its one of those days. I promise the next post will be far more interesting than this one. Please go and check out John and Hank Greens links at the top of this blog post, they really are worth it. If nothing else, I hope this post has put a smile upon your face or caused you to expel too much air through your nostrils (internet laughing). I shall return later this week with something more worthwhile…or perhaps some men with cheekbones and beards. Much spending has been done from my account too (it is not particularly happy about this), so when everything arrives I may do a ‘haul’ post if that is something people want to see? It is mostly a load of random stuff. I have lots of other ideas too, I just need to stop being so bloody good at procrastinating!
Thanks for reading this ever so rambling disjointed post.

candy bar creep show

I love Halloween. I love fake blood and skulls and food shaped like brains. This is probably because intrinsically I am a goth. I have loved dressing up as a zombie since I was about 8, with my mums limited DIY costume skills consisting of cutting up an old t shirt, painting my face white and back combing my hair within an inch of its life.
My friend Roisin and her mum used to have a halloween party every year, with apple bobbing and a spookily lit fake cemetery garden – it was always a hit.
When it turns the 1st of October, I become more than excited for all the halloween stuff to hit the shelves in the shops. Which, this year it did not! There was already Christmas stuff littering the supermarkets but nothing remotely death themed. And then yesterday, an unlikely contender make its self heard with halloweeen advertising – Lidl. Yes the German supermarket. They have costumes and alcohol and even chicken nuggets – all of which are halloween themed. This made me more than happy. Wednesday is the day I am taking a trip to Lidl (so expect an update on this post once I have).
As I have said before, Halloween just gets me. I am not one for the “roots” of the event, I fully embrace the commercialism with open arms. It is the one time of year that I find it easy to buy awesome stuff for my room, like glittery skulls and sparkly eye ball bows. Its not so easy to purchase these in the middle of May. And I love it all. Anything remotely sparkly/kitsch that involves a skull or skeleton and it has me reaching for my purse.
My only issue with the ‘Americanisation’ of this awesome occasion is the costumes that do not involve fake blood or at least looking vaguely dead. No, young teenage girl, a fairy is not a halloween costume! If you want to wear a tu-tu and wings, at least throw some blood or cobwebs (preferably both) over yourself too. In fact I think people that don’t do the aforementioned annoy me more than the people that refuse to dress up (which is also unacceptable). Even the ‘slutty’ witches, at least you’re halloween themed! Good job you!
This year, I have no plans as of yet. This needs to change. Anyone that would like to invite me to a party/to drink halloween themed cocktails, please do. Since White Night stopped being, there has not been anything remotely fun in the halloween section of my life. So lets make plans! I would dress in zombie makeup forever if I could, but alas, it is not so socially acceptable. Sadness. However, this year I have found the most perfect makeup look and I need to wear it somewhere.
Plus, look out for a halloween themed nail art tutorial that I am aiming to have up within the week.
